                                    Fill in the blanks on Tenses
Fill in the blanks with suitable verb forms  in any examination first of all we should know about tenses and the three forms of a verb. Then only we can identify the tense. Now I want to explain to you some of the examples on tenses.
1. They are in the kitchen. They are -------------
a. having dinner b. have dinner c. will have dinner.
Ans: a.
Explanation: To denote present going on action we should use present continuous tense only.
2. They -------- before I came.
a.have gone  b.had gone  c.went
Ans: b.
Explanation: When two actions completed in past in fraction of seconds the first completed action should be in past perfect, second completed action should be in simple past. In this sentence the first completed action is they had gone. Second one is  I came
3. They -------- television since 6’o clock
a.had been watching b. are watching c. have been watching
Ans : c
Explanation: To denote an action which starts in past ,continues in present, and possibility to continue in future we should use present perfect continuous tense.
4. They ------- doctor last night.
a.have visited b. visited c. had visited.
Ans: b.
Explanation: To denote already completed action we should use simple past.
5. The film ------ just now.
a. had started b.has started c. have started
Ans: b
Explanation : To denote just completed action we should use present perfect tense only.
6. I ------ owned this place for two years before I sold it.
a. am b. have c.had
Ans : c.
Explanation: When an action completed in past we should use past perfect tense only.
7. I -------- for the next month.
a. will travel b. will be travelling c. will have travelled.
Ans: a.
Explanation: To denote future action we should use simple future.
8. They ------ each other since last five years.
a. knew b. had known c.have known.
Ans : c.
Explanation: To denote point of time we should use present perfect continuous tense.
9. Our team ------ two matches this year.
a.have won b. has won c. had won.
Ans: b
Explanation: Here team is a collective noun. It takes singular verb. So we should use has won.
10. John cannot come with us because he --------- his leg.
a. broke b. had broken c. has broken
Ans : c.
Explanation: To denote recently completed action we should use present perfect tense.
11. I ------ for home by the time he gets up.
a. will have left b. leave c. will leave
Ans : a.
Explanation: An action which will be completed in a particular time in future  we should use future perfect tense.
12. She ----- to temple daily.
a. does go b. goes c. is going
Ans: b.
13. He ---------- honesty from his employees.
a. is expecting b. has expected c. will be expecting.
Ans : c
Explanation: To denote future going on actions we should use future continuous tense.
14. She ---------- writing for two years.
a. has been b. had been c. was been
Ans : a.
Explanation: To denote period of time we should use present perfect tense only.
15. He spent all the money on drinking what he ----
a. has earned b.have earned c. had earned.
Ans: c.
Explanation: To denote completed actions we should use past perfect tense.
 Finally I want to conclude that without having knowledge about tenses and verb forms we cannot frame a sentence and even cannot identify the errors in any sentences. So practice on tenses more to get success in any competitive examination.
