Def : Every language has its own idioms and they are an integral part of the language. They add beauty and charm to the language.
1.     An apple of discord : Cause of contention or quarrel
Eg : Miss. Rajani is an apple of discord in our college.
2.     The apple of one’s eye : Very dear
Eg: Prameela is an apple of her father’s eye.
3.     Apple pie order : Neat and clean
Eg: We must arrange the books in apple pie order.
4.     A bird of passage : A person who travels widely
Eg : My uncle is a bird of passage.
5.     A blue stocking : A lady who pretends to have literary taste.
Eg : Miss Rama is a blue stocking.
6.     A bull in a china shop : An unnecessary person or evil.
Eg : Rekha is a bull in a china shop because she creates tension among us with her arguments.
7.     A close fisted man : Miser
Eg : My grandfather is a close fisted man. He dislikes spending evn for his livelihood.
8.     A broken reed : A weak point or support.
Eg : My friend proved to be a broken reed when I was in trouble.
9.     A clean slate : A fresh beginning
Eg: She started with a clean slate in teaching.
10.                        Fair play : Honest method
Eg : If you want to succeed in life, you must follow only fair play.
11.                         A fair weather friend : A false
Eg : It is depend on a fair weather friend.
12.                         The fag end : The close
Eg : The people of Somalia are at the fag end of poverty.
13.                        A gala day : An important day/ year
Eg : 1857 is a gala day in Indian History.
14.                        Hush money : Bribe
Eg : He got a job by paying hush money.
15.                         A jail bird : A person who has been to jail on several occasions.
Eg : It is very hard to reform a jail bird because he does not give up his criminal attitude.
16.                         The olive branch : An offer of peace
Eg : India is always willing to offer the olive branch to Pakistan.
17.                        A past master : An expert
Eg : Mr.Murthy  is a past master in teaching English.
18.                         Red tapism : Excessive official formality
Eg : Red- tapism is found everywhere in India.
19.                         Scot free : Free from punishment
Eg : The criminal escaped scot free with the help of the jailer.
20.                         A swan song: An achievement before death.
Eg : The award proved to be a swan song in his life.
21.                         A wet blanket : A person who discourages
Eg : My friend is a wet blanket, she discourages me in everything.
22.                         A slow coach : A dull person
Eg : Pavan is a slow coach, he cannot pass the exam.
23.                         A snake in the grass : A hidden enemy
Eg : We cannot believe everyone, because there may be a snake in the grass among our friends.
24.                        A bolt from the blue : An unexpected misfortune
Eg : Dr. APJ Kalam’s death was a bolt from the blue to me.
25.                         Penelope’s web: An endless job.
Eg : The removal of unemployment is Penelope’s job.
Finally I want to tell you that Idioms and phrases are like curry leaves of language. They add flavour to our words or speech. So learn more and more Idioms and phrase and practice them in day to day life.
