Biography of Gurram Jashuva
Gurram Jashuva (28th sep,1895- 24th
july 1971) was Telugu poet. He was recognized with awards by Govt of India. His
literature’s impact on the society was studied by researchers, Literary awards
were instituted in his memory.
Eary life:
Jashuva was born to Virayya and Lingamma in Vinukonda, Guntur District,
Andhrapradesh, India. His father belonged to the Yadava caste and his mother belonged to Madhiga caste. Due
to poverty and inter caste marriage of his parents, his childhood was difficult
in a society in which some castes were considered untouchable. His parents
raised him as a Christian, yet Joshuva often drew inspiration from Hinduism and
Hindu mythological epics.This angered some Christians , who excluded Jashuva’s
family from their community. This did not deter Jashuva who continued to write
poetry in Telugu. Later, he graduated with Ubhaya Bhasha Praveena ( as a
scholar of Telugu and Sanskrit Languages)
Career:
Jashuva initially worked as a primary school teacher. He then worked as a
Telugu Producer in All India Radio, Madras between 1946- 1960. Protest against
untouchability and segregation have been common themes in all his works. His
main works include Gabbilam ( A Bat), Firadausi (A Rebel), and Kandiseekudu ( A
Refugee). Some of Jashuva’s verses had been incorporated into the popular
mythological play Harischandra,especially those in the cremation grounds scene.
Awards :
Ø Jashuva was presented the Sahitya Akademi Award for the work Kreestu Charitra in
1964.
Ø He was appointed as a Member of
Andhrapradesh Legislative Council in 1964.
Ø He was awarded Kala Prapoorna by
Andhra University in 1970.
Ø He was awarded Padma Bhushan by The
Govt of India in 1970.
