Organizations
are social structures. It is the backbone of management. If one desires to work
in them or to manage them, it is necessary to understand how they operate. Organizations
combine science, humanity, people and technology. Mooney and Reiley defined
Organization as the form of every
human association for attainment of a common purpose. Organization is simply,
people working together with common goal.
Organizational Behavior is related to individuals, group of
people working together in team. It is the study and application of knowledge
about how people act within organizations. It is a human tool for human
benefit. It applies broadly to the behavior of people in all types of
organizations, such as business, government, colleges, schools, hospitals,
Grampanchayats, cooperatives and non government organizations. It covers three
determinants of behavior in organizations: individuals, groups, and structure.
Organizational
Behaviour is an applied field. It
applies the knoeledge gained about individuals, and the effect of structure on
behavior, in order to make organizations work more effectively. Organizational
behavior covers the core topics of motivation, leadership styles, power,
decision making, interpersonal communication, group structure, learning
attitude development and perception, change process, conflict, work stress,
emotional intelligence, organizational culture and job design. It also involves
fostering a team spirit and motivation so that the organizational goals are
achieved.
Organizational
Behaviour is nothing more than developing our understanding and development of
people skill. It is a multidisciplinary field devoted to understanding
individual group behavior and interpersonal process in the organizational
setting.
Definition: Many psychologists and researchers
have defined organization behavior. Some important definitions of organization
behavior are:
Ø “Organization Behavior is a field of
study that investigates the impact that (i) individuals, (ii) groups, and (iii)
structure has on Behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying
such knowledge towards improving organizations’s effectiveness,” -----(Stephen
P. Robbins).
Ø “ Organization Behavior can be
defined as the: (i) understanding (ii) prediction (iii) control of human
Behavior in organizations”---(Fred Luthan).
Ø “Organization behavior is the study
of human Behavior in organizational setting, the interface between human
behavior and the organization itself.---- ( W.Ricky, G. Griffin, Moorhead).
Ø It is “ the study and application of
knowledge about human behavior related to other elements of an organization
such as structure, technology and social systems.”--- (LM Prasad)
Ø According to Stephen P.Robbins “
Organization Behavior is (i) A field of study with a common body of
knowledge. (ii) It studies three determinants of behavior in organizations viz
individuals, groups and structures. (iii) Knowledge about human behavior in
order to make organizations work effectively.
